To my young aspiring artists…..a lotta times I feel like ‘The Grinch’ after talkin’ to y’all…..or like I’m tellin’ a kid there’s no Santa Claus……and it’s because so many of you have NO IDEA how the business of music works. There are certain things that you can EXPECT in the business of music – and then there are the ‘fairytales’ that you’ve been fed about how artists get rich & famous.
I’ma share with y’all some do’s & don’ts in this business…u can listen to or disregard what I’m saying – but I GUARANTEE that the ppl who follow this simple list will see more success than those who don’t!!
Don’t believe that EVERY song you record is a “hit” (Professional rappers record 50-100 songs when making an album….then they pick the best 12-15….)
Don’t believe that somebody in an office somewhere is gonna hear your songs and give you a record deal (Major labels do NOT take chances on unknown artists)
Don’t believe that once you record your cd that EVERYBODY will buy it (There are a billion rappers runnin’ around sellin’ garbage CDs – most ppl tired o u niggaz)
Don’t believe that you can get on by buying youtube views and facebook likes and datpiff listens, etc…..(We have ways to see what’s fake and what’s real about ur fanbase)
Don’t believe that you can get on JUST by using the internet (Without a substantial street buzz and club presence ur not different than any other 12-45 yr old wannabe rapper)
There are a billion DON’Ts…..but I’ll stop right there — here are the Do’s:
Do believe in ur ability to make a “hit” record and put your ALL into every recording session that you have (trust your creativity – u ain’t gotta sound like everybody else to get noticed – u gotta sound like YOU!!)
Do build your network and try to meet ppl who are professionals in the music industry (Relationships mean a LOT in this business of music)
Do go out and try to sell your cd to as many ppl as possible and in as many places as possible (But also use TuneCore.com put it on iTunes and Amazon, etc.)
Do research and learn the BEST WAYS to get youtube views and facebook likes, etc. (The more ppl your music is exposed to – the more sells you’re likely to get)
Do get off your behind and get in the streets to pass out flyers and promo cds etc. (You gotta bring yourself and your music to the ppl without FORCING urself on em)
At the end of the day…..if you take the time to educate yourself on how this business works – then you’ll see exactly how to make a living in the music industry. This stuff is NOT common sense….it’s NOT simple…..it’s NOT easy….it’s NOT just shootin’ videos and poppin’ bottles clubbin’ and performing live and recording……all that stuff is the “show” in show business……the ppl who are famous that rap, sing and dance and get all the attention make the pennies…..the ppl who know how to SELL them to you make the millions. Learn the game and get paid….or stay dumb and get played.
