I always hear rappers bragging about their “bars” and lyrical ability. I’m a big fan of talented lyricists, I just feel the need to say something to the aspiring artists who are trying to carve out a space for themselves in today’s music industry.
If you’re a rapper…..the strongest skills you need are the ability to READ & COMPREHEND.
If you don’t read, then you won’t know how the music industry works. You don’t want to lack knowledge of the multiple ways that money is earned & distributed based on YOUR creation of music.
If you can’t comprehend what you read, then you will never understand the steps that MUST be taken in order to succeed in music.
Professional rappers control very little of their careers. The rapper doesn’t select his/her singles. The rapper doesn’t choose the release date. The rapper doesn’t decide where or when he/she will perform. The rapper CREATES the music which will be accepted or rejected by the label. The A&Rs and Radio Specialists test and select the singles. The label maps out the release date that is the most advantageous for the artist. The booking agent and manager accept the show dates. A rapper has to be humble and coachable so that the rest of the team can help him/her to win.
Lebron James alone cannot beat a college TEAM. Yet with his team he is capable of defeating ANYBODY on the court. Even Lebron has a coach. Every “great” in their field has a coach or mentor.
So read, learn, understand, be coachable and humble. These are the elements that your hard work & focus will mold into a career for you.
Don’t cheat yourself. Give YOU your all.
