Rappers: Do You Think We Believe You?

by Tony Guidry    April 7, 2013

In 2009, me & a couple of  artists I managed at the time, Brandon Wayne (aka Smoov) and Southern Indie rapper Evicious Daoneanonly (aka VI)  went to holla at the YMCMB Boss Birdman. We sat on the tour bus with Baby; and Smoov & VI ran it wit dude all night….played some Madden and heard a lotta unreleased music. Birdman even showed Smoov the “Money To Blow” video weeks before it hit 106 & Park.

The next day me & Smoov left while Evicious Daoneanonly went on the road with Baby for a month or so. In between shows, VI and Birdman recorded some songs together, (not some bs where a DJ mixed his verse into a song), but REAL collabos like Get It How You Live.

As a matter of fact, Evicious Daoneanonly was on the FIRST album Cash Money had ever released back in the day. Big Rufus & Baby consider VI an original “Cash Money” artist. But if you know how VI is as an artist, to this day he screams UGK Records & Vicious Entertainment. These are his REAL labels. He got MAJOR love for YMCMB & is very close to Baby, but he’s not signed to them.

Fast forward a couple years later and Kevin Gates benefits from some YouTube videos of him and the YMCMB fam kickin it. Guys from the label give him his props on camera. He’s managed by a YMCMB affiliate to this day, but Gates has excelled because of his hustle, label backing and skill, NOT his affiliation.

These days I see artists claiming to be affiliated with all the “HOT” labels. They claim to be Def Jam or Epic or CMG or YMCMB artists or affiliates – but they OBVIOUSLY don’t have the support of these labels & we ain’t never seen em wit an EXECUTIVE from any of these labels. We know they “exaggerating” – everybody knows it……I wonder why a nigga would lie to HIMSELF? I definitely ain’t buyin dat bs!! Lol Do they really think we believe em?

My point: Artists should strive to be noticed on their own. Your own team. Your own brand. Look at the rappers who are HOTT now…..they all have their OWN. Freebandz(Future), Cocaine Music Group(Yo Gotti), 1017 Brick Squad(Gucci Mane), Black Migo Gang(Young Scooter), BreadWinners Association (Kevin Gates) and the list goes on. Add yourself to the list of leaders making their own name ring and quit being a commercial for some ppl you don’t even know who are already successful.

To break it all the way down to two words: QUIT DICKRIDIN’

Don’t Be A Sucker, by Tony Guidry

To my young aspiring artists…..a lotta times I feel like ‘The Grinch’ after talkin’ to y’all…..or like I’m tellin’ a kid there’s no Santa Claus……and it’s because so many of you have NO IDEA how the business of music works. There are certain things that you can EXPECT in the business of music – and then there are the ‘fairytales’ that you’ve been fed about how artists get rich & famous.

I’ma share with y’all some do’s & don’ts in this business…u can listen to or disregard what I’m saying – but I GUARANTEE that the ppl who follow this simple list will see more success than those who don’t!!

Don’t believe that EVERY song you record is a “hit” (Professional rappers record 50-100 songs when making an album….then they pick the best 12-15….)

Don’t believe that somebody in an office somewhere is gonna hear your songs and give you a record deal (Major labels do NOT take chances on unknown artists)

Don’t believe that once you record your cd that EVERYBODY will buy it (There are a billion rappers runnin’ around sellin’ garbage CDs – most ppl tired o u niggaz)

Don’t believe that you can get on by buying youtube views and facebook likes and datpiff listens, etc…..(We have ways to see what’s fake and what’s real about ur fanbase)

Don’t believe that you can get on JUST by using the internet (Without a substantial street buzz and club presence ur not different than any other 12-45 yr old wannabe rapper)

There are a billion DON’Ts…..but I’ll stop right there — here are the Do’s:

Do believe in ur ability to make a “hit” record and put your ALL into every recording session that you have (trust your creativity – u ain’t gotta sound like everybody else to get noticed – u gotta sound like YOU!!)

Do build your network and try to meet ppl who are professionals in the music industry (Relationships mean a LOT in this business of music)

Do go out and try to sell your cd to as many ppl as possible and in as many places as possible (But also use TuneCore.com put it on iTunes and Amazon, etc.)

Do research and learn the BEST WAYS to get youtube views and facebook likes, etc. (The more ppl your music is exposed to – the more sells you’re likely to get)

Do get off your behind and get in the streets to pass out flyers and promo cds etc. (You gotta bring yourself and your music to the ppl without FORCING urself on em)

At the end of the day…..if you take the time to educate yourself on how this business works – then you’ll see exactly how to make a living in the music industry. This stuff is NOT common sense….it’s NOT simple…..it’s NOT easy….it’s NOT just shootin’ videos and poppin’ bottles clubbin’ and performing live and recording……all that stuff is the “show” in show business……the ppl who are famous that rap, sing and dance and get all the attention make the pennies…..the ppl who know how to SELL them to you make the millions. Learn the game and get paid….or stay dumb and get played.

Outside-Inreach, by Tony Guidry

After serving 17 years in a federal penitentiary, I noticed that there was a void in the marketplace.  Inmates need a place to purchase gifts and services at an affordable price.  OutsideInreach is a concierge service offered at affordable rates to state, county, and federal prisoners.
